At Least

I want to get up early one more morning,
before sunrise. Before the birds, even.
I want to throw cold water on my face
and be at my work table
when the sky lightens and smoke
begins to rise from the chimneys
of the other houses.
I want to see the waves break
on this rocky beach, not just hear them
break as I did all night in my sleep.
I want to see again the ships
that pass through the Strait from every
seafaring country in the world --
old, dirty freighters just barely moving along,
and the swift new cargo vessels
painted every color under the sun
that cut the water as they pass.
I want to keep an eye out for them.
And for the little boat that plies
the water between the ships
and the pilot station near the lighthouse.
I want to see them take a man off the ship
and put another up on board.
I want to spend the day watching this happen
and reach my own conclusions.
I hate to seem greedy -- I have so much
to be thankful for already.
But I want to get up early one morning, at least.
And go to my place with some coffee and wait.
Just wait, to see what's going to happen.

Still the Balloons

If he's doing this so that pretty girls with sallow eyes
and big hearts will give him a hug better, then I don't
think I can forgive him, but at least I'd understand. But
if he's doing this out of spite, a revenge fantasy against
his own successes, then he owes himself something more
than lowering himself to the level of careerists like
Smith, Adams or Dando.

You bring the whiskey and your guitar, I'll bring tapes
and a notebook. We'll get drunk, we'll tell stories, and
we'll slap one another on the back every time one of us
starts to slide.

[Wayne] Coyne grabs an unwieldy contraption and shoots
dry ice over us. Suddenly, all I can taste is incense.
Through the thick mist, mirrorballs reflect an
irridescent strobe, producing a transcendental otherworldly
moment of unlikely calm. Realisation and serenity through
dissonance. The Flaming Lips are a summation of everything
I've ever wanted. Happiness does indeed make you cry.
Michael Stipe would kill to produce stuff like this.

Returning for the encore, Coyne seems genuinely moved by
the raptures of the crowd. "It's like a drug, isn't it?".
It certainly is. The Flaming Lips wreak gentle devastation
with my mind and my whole fucking soul. And still the
balloons fly.

Holy Turtle

Just as rations ran short, someone found a beast of a land-turtle curled up in stowaway. Soup that night really boosted crew morale. Some said the turtle snuck on board before they set sail. Others said it was a pet that no one claimed. Hero thought it was divine intervention, that the turtle had only been on the planet a few moments before they found him. Goddamnit he wanted to believe in miracles.

Soup Choice

The next night, when soup-time came around, Hero was given the choice between duck and muskrat. Only he and the chef decided against duck. The chef's decision was made for him: there was no duck left by the time he could eat. Hero decided muskrat was more inspiring, even if it didn't sit right.

Let us look at this American first. How did he ever get to America, to start with? Why isn't he a European still, like his father before him?

Those Pilgrim Fathers didn't come for freedom. Or if they did, they sadly went back on themselves.

They came largely to get away - that most simple of motives. To get away. Away from what? In the long run, away from themselves. Away from everything. That's why most people have come to America, and still do come. To get away from everything they are and have been.

'Henceforth be masterless.'

Which is all very well, but it isn't freedom. Rather the reverse. A hopeless sort of constraint. It is never freedom till you find something you really positively want to be. And people in America have always been shouting about the things they are not....

So much for the conscious American motive, and for democracy over here. Democracy in America is just the tool with which the old master of Europe, the European spirit, is undermined. Europe destroyed, potentially, American democracy will evaporate. America will begin.

American consciousness has so far been a false dawn. The negative ideal of democracy. But underneath, and contrary to this open ideal, the first hints and revelations of IT. IT, the American whole soul.

You have got to pull the democratic and idealistic clothes off American utterance, and see what you can of the dusky body of IT underneath.

'Henceforth be masterless.'

Henceforth be mastered.

colloquial Chinese

Yesterday the mayor of Taipei came to participate in the opening
ceremonies of the conference. He was in the paper yesterday. He is
a candidate for higher office and his father said in an interview
that if his son is actually elected to this office, he (the father)
will commit suicide. The paper did not explain how we were to read
this statement. Was this just some sort of colloquial Chinese
expression that doesn't translate well? Is this just what fathers do
when their sons are elected to higher office? My trip has been full
of questions like this for which no answers will ever be produced.

mattered
not directly.
there are billions of people who have
never read him and never
will.
but as a young man I know that he
got me through the factories,
past the whores,
lifted me high through the night
and put me down
in a better
place.
even while in the bar
drinking with the other
derelicts,
I was glad they gave Dostoevsky a
reprieve,
it gave me one,
allowed me to look directly at those
rancid faces
in my world,
death pointing its finger,
I held fast,
an immaculate drunk
sharing the stinking dark with
my
brothers.
